We had the most beautiful, sunny day for Paula’s shoot at Black Hall Mill last week; the setting was absolutely gorgeous too! I arrived on to the yard to find Paula doing those last minute touch ups with the horses, straightening their forelocks and running a brush over their coats. Once the horses were all set to go, Paula nipped off to get changed and arrived back looking very smart and classy in her navy jacket and leather riding boots.
Paula was after photographs of her two horses, Fabio and Willy. She has owned 12 year old Fabio since he was 4 years old and schooled him up the levels in dressage - they are now planning their first outing at Medium. Whereas Willy is more a ‘been there, got the T-shirt’ horse who has competed at Prix St George with his owner, Belinda. After an unfortunate injury, and a year of box rest, Willy has been coming back into work with Paula who is hoping to learn from him and his dressage experience.
We began the shoot in the stable block, capturing the horses in the doorways, so I could use the dark background to create some black background images of the horses. Both horses stood beautifully for the photos and looked gorgeous against the dark background. We then worked our way across the yard and down into the Cross Country field, where we had a lot of beautiful scenery to work with.
Willy and Fabio stood so patiently while we captured bonding photos by the jumps, on the logs, and with the colourful bushes and trees in the background. We captured a mix of group photos as well as individual photos with each horse before wrapping up the shoot with some head shots of each. They were all complete naturals in front of the camera, and along with the fabulous setting, were a pleasure to photograph!
Thank you very much for inviting me and introducing me to both your lovely boys – I hope you like your photos!
