After Gemma had kindly helped us with Karyn’s photo shoot back in March, it was all hands on deck as roles reversed and Karyn was chief groom for Gemma. Gemma booked a two hour shoot so we had plenty time to photograph her four legged family – Jonjo, Saxon and Mickey. When I arrived, North East Mason’s pony parlour was in full swing and all horses had been bathed to within an inch of their lives, and every last piece of tack was spotless! Gemma had been carefully revising the inspiration pack sent to her prior to her shoot and came prepared with several outfits and props to add some variety to her photos.

We began the shoot on the courtyard – Gemma was sat on the mounting block enjoying some bonding time with Jonjo. Jonjo is her striking 21 year old bright bay, Welsh cob cross Hackney, whom she drives and shows in hand. He was ever so photogenic and just loved to cuddle into Gemma – they had a fabulous bond. We tried out a few different backdrops round the yard, using gates and tracks to mix it up a little.

Saxon was next up – Gemma’s 5 year old Blagdon cob. She has owned Saxon since he was just two months old, when he was found unaccounted for. With the help of a friend, she backed him herself, and he is now her ridden horse. Saxon behaved impeccably throughout the shoot and took everything in his stride – nothing was too much to ask!

Finally, in front of the camera we had the little mischief – Mickey Mouse! Mickey has bags of character but was a real sweet heart and good fun to photograph! Gemma has owned him since he was 6 months old, and now at nearly 4 years of age, he is starting to do pony rides for two young children who visit to play with him. Gemma is also working towards breaking him to drive – he has his very own little cart!

We did a loop of all the scenic spots on and around the yard while Gemma wore a beautiful flowery summers dress – which she was so excited to get her photos taken in! While Gemma nipped upstairs to get changed into a more casual jeans and summers top combination for the second half of her shoot, we used a dark stable doorway to capture some black background pictures of the boys. We then rounded up the shoot with some more pictures round the yard with a variety of new backdrops – there were just so many options to choose between at Masons!

I had a wonderful two hours photographing Gemma and her four legged family – thank you for inviting me to do so, I hope you enjoyed yourself too! And a massive thank you also to Karyn, for her fabulous grooming skills and being (as Gemma wonderfully put it), our portable tie up ring!
